bottom line is, it's muggy once again. you can see the humid haze. in some places, it's actually foggy. sharon is watching the traffic and bernadette woods is in for marty bass in first warning weather. good morning, everyone, okay, this is where we're starting out. it's another warm one. we jumped down to 68. really cooling down. it's muggy and going to get hot again this afternoon. we're going to the mid-90s, maybe not quite as muggy as yesterday? that's just splitting hairs.

tomorrow, all of that skyrockets. tomorrow through the reeked, we're talk about temperatures approaching triple digits. we'll have a heat watch going into effect. how about the rush? here's sharon with traffic control. hi, don, we cleared up the accidents that we had. we have two disabled vehicles. the most recent is on 50 in the westbound lanes blocking the right lane. also, watch for the disabled vehicle on 95 past the fort mchenry toll plaza. two water main breaks on u.s. 40 and westbound johnny cake road. all lanes blocked on revolution street. take gerard to get around that. everything is at full speed on the beltway. there's a lye look at the -- there's a live look at the westside. remember, wjz is always on, for traffic information any time

go, to wjz.com. back to you, don. we'll begin by last night's breaking news, a city police officer was shot and wounded in south west baltimore. gigi barnett has more. >> reporter: good morning, don. good morning, everyone. well, all morning long, officers have been arriving here at shock trauma to check on this officer's condition. the department says he's extremely lucky. just after 11:30 last night, a 24-year-old police officer working the midnight shift received a call to cooks lane. >> the officer was investigating the call for service and interviewing the individuals involved and he heard gunshots. he turned down and noticed he was shot in the stomach and hip. >> reporter: it was a graze

wound. >> he's very, very lucky. >> reporter: the medics rushed him to shock trauma. he's in stable condition. >> thest unclear who fired the shots. >> reporter: the police say that the officer never fired his weapon. >> reporter: the police department has not yet released the identity of the officer. he's been on the force for five years. >> anyone with information on the shooting is asked to call the baltimore city police detectives. a north baltimore teen is facing attempted murder charges from last week. this 16-year-old is charged as an adult. one of the wounded is released from the hospital. one is still in serious condition. they're also looking for a second person of interest. a veteran city police officer with more than a decade of experience is accused of

selling heroin while on the job and in june -- uniform. >> reporter: the city police department asked the fbi to investigate. this 41-year-old daniel red is accused of being one of the master minds in a conspiracy to distribute heroin across the city. he's supposed to be helping us from the onings doing it -- from the ones doing it. >> reporter: he's one named in an indictment. he made drug deals in the northwest district. agents arrested him tuesday morning. >> if you carry a gun and deal drugs, you're going to face a lengthy term. >> reporter: prosecutors say he walk out of the northwest

police station wearing his police uniform to another part of the parking lot and he handed out an undisclosed amount of heroin. >> the men and women investigating crimes and keeping people safe are embarrassed and out raged. >> reporter: he's quoted as saying, i get a little piece and you get the whole shebang. he talks about a big brick and a kilo. he's been ordered to be held until he gets a detention hearing. he's dangerous and a flight risk. he's been with the department since '94. he was fired in 2002 for falling asleep on the job. he sued and got reenstated and received back pay. mayor stephanie rawlings- blake unveils a new tax plan. city homeowners would see a

city tax cut of 20% by 2020. that would be funded from the slots parlor and the revenue. this is in response to her challenger. the president is bringing his message to maryland later on this week. he'll host a town hall meeting friday at the university of college park. they'll hand out a number of tickets tomorrow morning. the topic is the debt ceiling debate currently going on in washington, d.c.. the justice department welcomes a meeting for the families of those killed on 9/11 who believe their phones may have been hacked by a british tabloid.

[no audio] this former editor is the communication's chief. he was arrested in connection with the newspaper's phone hacking scandal. cameras were close to rebekah brooks. >> he's a neighbor, a friend, i deem the relationship to be wholly appropriate. >> reporter: in her own interrogation tuesday, brooks admitted something went wrong and described the allocations of hacking as pretty horrific. >> reporter: the prime minister cut short a trip to africa for this emergency meeting to stem the growing relationship with the murdoch empire. >> the people i've trusted to run and then, maybe the people they trusted. >> reporter: murdoch has no plans to step down from his global empire.

during murdoch's testimony, a man tried to show a shaving cream pie in his face, he faces charges now. boeing is making a last ditch appeal to american airlines. it wants to sell the company the revamped 737 with the new revamped engine. american airlines is needing 200 new planes. some of the order will go to air bus from europe. nissan's lease is getting expensive. it's costing over $3500. they're adding features like heated seats. the car will be sold in more states. right now, it's only available in six states. michael vick is throwing his weight behind a tougher federal dog fighting bill. he's taking the fight to

good morning, to everyone. this is what we dealt with yesterday throughout the overnight. the thunderstorms that made their way through -- the winds are pick up out of the north. that mixes up the thick atmosphere. we have sun and it's warm and muggy. 76 degrees in baltimore. we're going up this afternoon and more so the next few afternoons. we have a code orange air quality alert.

tomorrow, we have an an an excessive heat warning. this is going to be extended into saturday. yes, it's been hot. it's not that it hasn't been, but the worst is still to come. it's sitting over the middle of the country and it's held up over this cold front. now that's gone, it will allow the heat to move up. still, because of the front moving through, there's a chance of a thunderstorm. the bigger story is the heat building. here's the next front that will pass by friday and saturday. we'll have a chance of a thunderstorm on saturday. wait until you see the numbers. tropical storm bret is still spinning. we have another one that the national hurricane center is monitoring. 94 for the high. it will be muggy and tonight, 74-degree. take a look at the next few days here.

just after 11:30 last night, a 24-year-old police officer working the midnight shift received a call to the 1100 block of cook lane for a domestic dispute call. >> the officer was interviewing individuals involved and then, the officer heard a series of gunshots. he suffered a wound to his stomach and hip. >> reporter: it was a graze wound. >> lucky that the bullet didn't penetrate the officer. >> reporter: medics listed him in stable condition. >> we have no information on suspects and motives. it's not clear who fired the shots. >> reporter: the police say that the officer never fired his weapon. at shock trauma, the officers say that he could go home sometime today. the police department hasn't released his identity. he's been on the force for five years. >> anyone with information on

the shootings is asked to call the police detectives. a state fire marshall's office is investigating how a class of emt's got their hands on training materials. it happened at the public safety training facility. the investigators are looking over documents looking at who to interview. the list could include the cadets and training officers and others. maryland's perfect bond rating is in jeopardy because of the debt ceiling crisis. maryland is among five states that's been put up for a possible downgrade because of the state's reliance on federal revenues and government workers. the downgrade could happen if a deal on a debt ceiling isn't reached in washington, d.c.. are we closer to that? here's joel brown reporting for wjz.

>> reporter: deficit negotiations could fete a jump start today. >> it's time to get down to the business of solving the problem. we now are seeing the president for a bipartisan consensus. >> reporter: president obama may invite leaders back to the white house now that there's a plan on the table. the gang of six unveiled the proposal tuesday. it trims $4 billion from the deficit with $5 billion cut immediately. this includes new tax revenues and cuts to medicare and medicaid. it stands a better chance of a tea party backed bill. the lawmakers rammed it through last night. president obama vowed to shoot it down. the gang of six plan is gaining support. several republicans think it can pass with the majority of 70 votes. >> there's so many things that are going to make sense.

>> reporter: and the proposal still faces herdable -- hurtles in the house. >> we know we need to get to a place by august 2nd. default isn't an option. >> and this morning, local congressman, elijah cummings will be there to talk about the impact that a debt default would have. also, on capitol hill, the information on more mortgage abuse. row bow signatures are still used on some documents signatures don't belong to a person. it's a rubber stamp for what's gone before. the banks promised to stop the practice. the power of the "harry potter" franchise: the first seven films banked $1.5 billion. that doesn't compound the

both sides are trying to settle another side. this is the sticking point for the new agreement. the suit won't prohibit an agreement for being finalized very, very soon. also, derek lee's two run homer last night propelled the orioles to a 6-2 win. that's the fourth win in the 19 games for the last place orioles. when the orioles take to the field, the mercury on the thermometer may be close to maxing out. here's kai jackson with more. >> reporter: from coast to coast, america is baking in a dangerous wave of heat. in iowa, roads buckled under the extreme weather. more than a dozen states reported temperatures around 100-degree. >> it's rough, i'm ready for a nap. it wears you out. >> reporter: baltimorians are

feeling the burn as the sun scorches everyone and everything in site. for some, relief meant cooling off in the visitor's center fountains. i'm going to be inside all day. >> reporter: people working outside and those exercising can be vulnerable. >> reporter: it's all about location, well, if your location is in maryland, it's all about >> hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. >> reporter: doctors are warping people to be aware of heat related illness. symptoms include fatigue, heavy sweating and muscle cramping and fatigue. the older people and the younger people don't have the ability to ward off the heat like increased circulation. >> reporter: more people die

from heat related illnesses than all other combined. a code red heat alert is in effect through sunday. we were talking earlier. i've heard reports of the heat index in the midwest of 130 plus. >> it's rare to get 130. that's rare. that's why you're hearing it. i didn't see the number coming in. i'm not going to deny it. i saw 100s and up into the teens. that's excessive. >> that's amazing. >> we could be pushing 110 with some of this coming our way. the heat index. the temperature itself is close to 100-degrees. be smart about this. >> well, it's like one of the tv transitions. a hot author is with us. his latest book, "sex on the moon."

the temperatures are going up the next few dies -- days. we have a code orange affect today. that will get up to code red the next few days. you see, out to the west, here's where the extreme heat is. that's what's moving in our direction. it's been held up. with the cold front leaving us, it's opening the way for hot air to come in our direction. we'll see the numbers going up into the 90s this afternoon. and then, we'll have a cold front passing to the north ofs. maybe a shower or thunderstorm from it. that's friday and saturday. we have tropical storm bret moving away from land. we have another area monitored by the national hurricane center. we're going up to 94 degrees. it will be muggy. tonight, take a look at these next few days. brace yourself.
